what exactly is secondary glazing?

Secondary glazing is not a new product.

Back in the 19th century windows properties were built with single glazed, wooden windows which had no draught-proofing. Some windows, particularly sash windows, were often built with another sliding sash window fitted behind it that was raised to try and keep out the cold and, to lesser extent, the ever-increasing traffic noise.

Today secondary glazing is built from modern materials and is fully draught-proofed. When required the use of specialist acoustic glass can dramatically decrease the amount of external noise entering the property.

secondary glazing v double glazing

Fitting secondary glazing involves fitting a separate slimline and discreet window behind your existing window whereas double glazing involves removing and replacing your existing window.

Double glazing is expensive.

As you are having to replace an entire window with sealed units (two panes of glass fitted close together) it will cost more than single glazed secondary glazing.

Secondary glazing is much more effective at reducing noise.

The two pane of glass in a new primary double-glazed window are only 20mm apart. This small gap is ineffective at stopping noise transmission. Fitting secondary glazing somewhere between 100mm & 150mm away from your existing window can, with the appropriate glass, substantially reduce external noise.

Fitting double glazing is messy.

Secondary glazing is designed to complement the style of your existing windows and does not involve removing anything, unlike the removal of existing windows which often involves repairs to plasterwork and window surrounds.
