If you have single glazed windows in your property they may still be the ones that were installed when it was built.
They are likely to be draughty, lose copious amounts of heat and stop you using the whole of each room to maximum effect.
If you wanted to change them it would be very expensive and disruptive and if your existing windows are full of character that will be lost forever.
That’s where secondary glazing comes in.
It is much cheaper than replacing, there is no redecorating needed and, with the correct glass option, will actually be more effective at reducing heat loss and eliminating draughts.
Using a high performance, energy efficient glass such as Pilkington K™ will help reduce the existing heat loss by up to 60-70% if your existing windows are perfectly sealed (and it will be even more for existing windows that are draughty).
Pilkington K™ and other LowE glasses have invisible reflective coatings on the internal face of the glass which let the energy from the Sun pass through into your room but then prevent it from escaping, and in the process greatly reduces or even eliminates condensation.
Of course, reduced heat loss will reduce your household energy bills. How much you can save is dependant on the type of property but you can expect to save around £50 per year in a small flat and about £160 in an average-sized detached house.
Over the years we have found that our customers actually start to use more of the space in their home after their secondary glazing has been installed. They can sit and relax nearer to their windows without feeling cold or draughts blowing on them. Before secondary glazing was fitted they didn’t want to spend much time in certain rooms because they were too cold or it cost too much to heat them properly.
If your property is a Listed building or historically significant then the Preservation Officers at your local council will insist that the existing windows are not disturbed or replaced.
Because secondary glazing is viewed as a temporary addition (ie. if it was removed and the fixing holes filled up you would never know it had been there) it is the only solution available and is approved by English Heritage.
